Grades 1, 2, 3:Recreational art is offered in grades 1-3. Students are encouraged and assisted to develop practical and critical abilities within a wide range of art and design activities. They are given the opportunity to experiment across a wide area in a variety of media.
Grades 4 & 5 (elective):The Art and Design GCSE offers a choice of subjects in which the students may experiment in a range of media, and work from their own observation and imagination. Furthermore, they are encouraged to develop their own artistic and design skills.
Grades 6 & 7 (elective):The Art Department offers both the Fine Art and Graphic Communication Advanced Level examination.
This two-year course provides students with the opportunity to learn and develop a range of skills in relation to drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media. Students produce a body of work in the form of a work journal, following the art process from initial research and concepts through development and experimentation towards a final response in the form of a finished piece. Alongside the development of their theme, students research a range of relevant artists to gain inspiration for their own creative ideas.
This course is designed for creative arts students who are interested in advertising, typography, illustration and design. Students will use both practical and digital processes to create a range of products including posters, book covers and packaging. The use of computer software is included in the course, alongside more traditional skills such as drawing, painting and mixed media work.
By understanding the subtleties of the visual messages around us, we can reinterpret them in new ways. Graphic design is a part of your daily life. Graphic design informs, persuades, organizes, stimulates, locates, identifies, attracts attention and provides pleasure. We apply this understanding using typography, photography, illustration, colour association and texture. We learn how to expertly combine these elements to communicate an idea, and evoke an emotional response to the audience.
