TEACHING AND LEARNING PLAN FOR YEAR 4/5 FOR GCSE ART AND DESIGN: FINE ART

GCSE Art and Design offers students the opportunity to explore contemporary and historical sources of art, craft and design through research as well as visiting museums, galleries and art shows. It equips students with the skills to produce and develop drawing practice, painting, mixed media, printing, sculpture and installation work. In drawing and painting the formal elements of colour, line, form and tone are explored. Written annotation is also vital in supporting the students’ work and explains their creative journey and intentions.

GCSE Art and Design is a two year course which consists of:

Personal Portfolio:

This is a centre  set theme chosen in consultation with students. Students produce a portfolio of work in the form of an A3 sketchbook, producing one page weekly. Demonstrating knowledge, understanding of practical skills and researching artists, students will also develop primary research in the form of photography. This culminates in the final outcome which is produced in the first term of Year 5.

Externally Set Assignment:

The externally set theme is released on 2 January in Year 5. The students again produce a portfolio of work in the form of an A3 sketchbook. There is a ten hour examination in which students produce a personal final outcome.

The Assessment Objectives include:

  • developing ideas informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding
  • exploring and selecting resources, media, materials, and techniques, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops
  • recording ideas, observations relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and process
  • presenting a personal response that realizes intentions.
