The Visionary Founder – Ioannis Gregoriou
Ioannis Gregoriou was born in Phlasou in 1930. After completing his secondary education in Cyprus, he travelled to the United States to study Business Administration. When he returned to Cyprus in 1952, he began his career as a teacher in various Nicosia secondary schools, where his strong sense of purpose and leadership quickly became evident.
Following Cyprus’ independence, he founded Cyprus College, and later established The Grammar School in 1963, followed by The Private English Junior School in 1970. For 32 years, Ioannis devoted his life to raising the standards of education in Cyprus, introducing Business Administration as a scientific discipline and authoring textbooks on shorthand and typing. His passion for education and commitment to excellence shaped the foundation of the schools that continue to thrive today.
Perseverance and Rebuilding
The 1974 Turkish invasion marked one of the most difficult chapters in the school’s history. The Grammar School and Cyprus College buildings near the Nicosia International Airport were lost after being captured by Turkish troops.
Despite the enormous setback, Ioannis Gregoriou remained undaunted. He purchased land in the Nicosia–Anthoupolis area and began rebuilding from the ground up. Within a few years, the school reopened with modern facilities and renewed purpose. Today, The Grammar School and The Private English Junior School welcome more than 1,200 students, standing as symbols of resilience and vision.
Recognition and Legacy
Ioannis Gregoriou’s contributions to education were widely recognised. President Spyros Kyprianou appointed him as advisor on private educational matters, and he later became President of the Association of Private Secondary Schools.
His institutions were guided by his enduring principles of democracy, discipline, and academic excellence — values that remain central to the schools today. Following his passing in 1987, his children, Mr. Akis Gregoriou and Mrs. Sylvana Eleftheriades, continued his mission, ensuring that the spirit of innovation and quality education he championed lives on.
Expanding the Vision – Gabriel Gregoriou’s Early Life
Born in Phlasou in 1933, Gabriel Gregoriou shared his brother’s dedication to education and community service. After his family emigrated to the United States in 1950, he pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Economics, followed by a Master’s degree in Political Science.
While studying, Gabriel worked in several banks and later joined The United States Steel Corporation in New York, where he developed a strong sense of leadership and business acumen. After nearly three decades in the US, he returned to Cyprus in 1975, determined to contribute to the country’s educational landscape.
The Grammar School in Limassol – Gabriel’s Legacy
In 1975, Gabriel Gregoriou founded The Grammar School and The Private English Junior School in Limassol, as branches of the Nicosia organisation. As the schools grew and gained a strong reputation for excellence, he purchased land in the Panthea region, where new, purpose-built premises were constructed.
This expansion allowed both schools to grow independently and offer better facilities for their students. Sadly, just one year after completing the first phase of the new Grammar School building, Gabriel Gregoriou passed away in 1993. His unwavering commitment to high educational standards, honesty, and community spirit continues to inspire and shape the schools’ success to this day.
